Family-friendly! An authentic Scandinavian event featuring dancing, entertainment, food, Viking-Age crafts, demonstrations, seminars, and other activities.
Heidi will be presenting several programs including a virtual vacation of Iceland, folklore for children, and an Icelandic cooking demonstration. Times for each program will be posted soon! Presentations subject to change
Legendary Iceland – Land of Fire & Ice, Legacy of Legend
A journey through Iceland, a land where legends come alive, led by an Icelandic-American author. This presentation is a virtual vacation of Iceland, blending the breathtaking landscapes and fascinating history with the unique mythology of this Nordic culture. Using my own photography and video, this tour takes attendees along the famous ring road through the entire country, where they learn about the landscape, the country’s history and folklore and the culture of today. A fascinating and entertaining presentation on one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations.
Iceland Folk Tales – Trolls & Legends of Iceland
The Hidden Folk, Monster Worm, Yule Lads, Gryla, and more! This story-based presentation provides an entertaining look at Icelandic folklore from trolls to wiggle-waggle monsters and everything in between. The mythology is a blend of Viking legends, stories from the Sagas, and folklore brought from other countries. How the Icelandic people have incorporated it into daily life is both fascinating and refreshing. The warnings, lessons, and instruction presented in the stories reflect wisdom, tolerance, and common-sense approach to life. Children will hear 3-5 stories from my folklore book, The Guardians of Iceland and Other Icelandic Folk Tales, and learn the lessons from each.
Icelandic Cooking Demonstration
The food and cultural history of Iceland is unique to Scandinavia and dates back to the time of the Vikings. Presentation, including taste-testing, developed from the award-winning cookbook, Homestyle Icelandic Cooking for American Kitchens.
Jólasveinar Poem Reading & Crafts
English Recitation of Jóhannes úr Kötlum’s 1932 poem “Jólasveinarnir,” introducing the Icelandic Yule Lads with local costumed volunteers, approximately 15-20 minutes. An interactive craft activity will follow where children will receive a take-home item.
